Do you love to work with animals? Would you like to make a difference in the lives of people who have pets that they love? Or, would you like to work with farmers who have animals that need treatment and care? If so, a career in veterinary medicine may be right for you. But like any medical profession, becoming a veterinarian will require years of education. How do you choose which veterinary school to go to? Here are some factors that you should consider:
Cost: Can you afford the tuition for veterinary school? It may seem like you can’t, but keep in mind that there are a number of ways in which you can fund your education. Many organizations, particularly the United States government, make grants, scholarships, and loans available to prospective students who meet particular eligibility requirements or other criteria. Go to the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) Web site and fill out the FAFSA form. With it, you can apply simultaneously for a large number of potential loans or grants.
Location: Do you need to go to a veterinary school near you? Perhaps you need to work while going to school or take care of an invalid relative. In that case, you’ll need to find a veterinary school within easy commuting distance. (You don’t want to spend time in the care that you could use for studying.) If you can afford to move away from home, decide on a school is in a place where you’d like to live. You may even like it so much that you’ll open your first veterinary practice there.
Prestige: Is the veterinary school well respected? Will having its diploma on your office wall make you more appealing to the owners of your prospective patients? The more prestigious a school is, the more expensive your education will be. However, if the school’s name helps you establish yourself with colleagues and pet owners, it will more than pay for the extra expense.
Staff: Are the teachers at the veterinary school well regarded? Remember, these are the people who will teach you the skills that will make you either a good veterinarian or an indifferent one.
