Most schools that offer nursing degrees also offer several different nursing programs through which you can earn your degree. These programs are often designed to facilitate your continuing education as a nurse and advance from degree to degree even as you work in the field and earn money at your profession.
Check with the school of your choice to see what sort of nursing programs they offer. In some cases, accelerated nursing programs may be available. These will allow you to work your way to a registered nurse (RN) certification in much less time than normal, allowing you to begin or advance your career on an accelerated basis. This is important if your resources are limited because it will be that much less time before you start making an income and can begin to pay off any loans that you’ve incurred in obtaining your education. It will also shorten the amount of time before you can enjoy the gratification of being a nurse and helping people in their times of need.
Different schools offer very different nursing programs. Some offer LPN (licensed public nursing programs), some offer ADN (associate’s degree of nursing) programs, and others offer BSN (bachelor’s of science in nursing) programs. Still others will offer transitional programs that are designed to step you from one of these degrees to another: LPN to ADN programs, ADN to BSN programs, and onward to graduate degrees in nursing.
Some nursing programs allow you to study online and even to transfer your credits from accredited online schools to your classroom education. This makes it possible to mix and match a custom program that specifically fits your needs, which may include the necessity of earning a living while obtaining a degree or economizing on your tuition. However, bear in mind that there are ways to make your tuition affordable. Grants and scholarships are available from a number of organizations, most particularly the United States government, that can make a nursing degree essentially free. And, student loans are readily available if you can show the need for one. Loans need to be paid off after graduation, but the interest is usually low, and the increased salary you’ll get from a more advanced education will make the loan pay for itself. Remember, somewhere out there are nursing programs that precisely fit your needs.
